Harris George Davis (47), of Loeven Street, Cairns, a storeman employed by the Vacuum Oil Company Pty. Ltd., suffered spinal and internal injuries, multiple contusions to the stomach, and back and severe shock when he was crushed between a truck and a railway wagon at the Vacuum depot yesterday. HARRIS (HORRIE) GEORGE DAVIS The death of Mr. H. G. Davis, 5 Loeven-street. Cairns, took place on Friday evening following a serious accident at work on Thursday. The deceased, who was 48 years of age, was a son of the late Mr. Jack Davis, of Irvinebank and Mrs. C. Davis, of Townsville. Born at Reed River he spent most of his life in Cairns and district. He joined the Cairns Railway band as a boy in 1919, a very keen playing member and took part in several contests, including the Australian championship in 1926 which the band won in "D" grade. He was a very keen and active member of the Cairns rifle club for many years. During the past 21 years he was a member of the staff of the Vacuum Oil Co. and the recipient of a gold medal for 20 years' faithful service. Previous to World War II he was a member of the Militia and at the outbreak of war saw active service with the 51st Battalion A.M.F. An active and keen freemason in Carpentaria Lodge and in Capitular Free-masonry and a Companion of Gregory Royal Arch Chapter until his death. He was held in the highest esteem and regard by all who knew and associated with him. He was a quiet and unassuming personality. The late Horrie Davis is survived by his widow, daughter Joan and sons Alfred and Leslie also, by his mother (Mrs. C. Davis, of Townsville), brothers Jack and Leslie, of Cairns, sisters, Mrs Leal Franklin (Townsville) and Mrs. Phoebe Griffiths, of Lae. The funeral moved from the Masonic Temple Minnie-street. Cairns, and was largely attended by relatives, friends, fellow members of the R.S.S.A .I.L.A. and other ex-servicemen, members of the rifle club and band. Orders of the Masonic fraternity formed a guard of honour at the Temple. The Church of England minister (Rev. Fraser) officiated at the graveside, followed by the last rites of the Masonic orders, of which the deceased was a member. The requiem prayer was said by an ex-serviceman (Mr. N. Simm) and the "Last Post" sounded by Mr. T. McLean. The floral tributes were very beautiful, marking the high esteem in which he was held. Representatives of the Carpentaria Lodge, Gregory Royal Arch Chapter,R.S.S.A.I.L.A., Rifle Club, Vacuum Oil Co. and Cairns District Masonic Club were pall-bearers. HARRIS (HORRIE) GEORGE DAVIS.
