DAVIS, George Irvine

Birth Name DAVIS, George Irvine
Gender male
Age at Death 66 years, 11 months, 14 days

Narrative

As a child I remember George as a tall thin man who was an avid gardener and more often than not referred to as uncle George. He worked for the shire council in Cairns and in his spare time he remodelled jam and fruit tins into flower pots. He would cut them from the top down in strips approximately one quarter of an inch wide and of various lengths and then curl them using a key from a sardine or bully beef tin. He would then paint them in various colours, sometimes with butterflies and flowers on them. After they were planted with what ever seemed to be available, they would either be lined in rows on benches or hung as baskets. There was always a profusion of colour and a vast variety of plants in the garden.

George enlisted in the army Friday, 20 October 1939 in Cairns and was discharged Monday, 3 September 1945 with the rank of sergeant. His service number was QX3511
