Dr. Someren, full name being Dr. G. Arbuthnot Van Someren, was only in Queensland for five years before he was called to treat the author's great grandmother, Charlotte Frances SMITH (nee FRENCH), nine days before she died.

Dr. Someren M.B. was appointed medical officer at Cloncurry in January 1884

In February 1886 Dr. Someren was appointed as surgeon-superintendent for Cloncurry Hospital

RESIGNATION.-The resignation tendered by G. A. Von Someren, M.B, &c, of his appointment as medical officer at Cloncurry, has been accepted.
His successor was Dr. Freeman.

OFFICIAL NOTIFICATIONS. (1886, March 13). The Brisbane Courier (Qld. : 1864 - 1933), p. 3. TROVE

Winton Our new hospital surgeon, Dr. G. A. Van Someren, also hails from Cloncurry. His arrival has been most opportune, for our late surgeon, Dr. Finlay, has of late been indulging in such vagaries, that a special hospital meeting was called, at which he received his salary and immediate dismissal.

WINTON. (1886, April 19). Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Qld. : 1878 - 1954), p. 5. TROVE

We have just passed new rules for our hospital, which were sadly needed. Our present surgeon, Dr. van Someren, has resigned, intending to practise in Townsville. He suited us well and his absence will be a loss to the district.

APPOINTMENTS.— G. A. Von Someren, M.B., to be official visitor to the Townsville Reception House in the room of T. Ridgley, deceased;

Official Notifications. (1887, August 27). The Queenslander (Brisbane, Qld. : 1866 - 1939), p. 341. TROVE

The Archer left Glasgow on 13th April with 136 immigrants under the charge of Dr. G. Arbuthnot Van Someren, as surgeon-superintendent, and Mrs. Skinner, matron. She also took a general cargo. She arrived at Malta on the 22nd, and left on the 23rd ; arrived at Port Said on the 27th, Suez on the 29th, and Aden on 5th May; left on the same date, and arrived at Colombo on the 14th ; left same date, and arrived at Batavia on the 24th; left on the 25th, and arrived at Thursday Island on the 3rd June and anchored for the night ; arrived off Townsville on the 6th, and was delayed nearly eight days owing to insufficient means of lighterage ; left on the evening of the 14th, and arrived in Keppel Bay on the 16th ; waited four hours for orders, and left at 5 p.m. same date, arriv- ing in Brisbane at 2 a.m. yesterday. The vessel encountered a very severe north- westerly gale in the Mediterranean Sea before reaching Malta. The sea teas so heavy that, it was found necessary to heave the vessel to for nine hours. She also experienced very strong south-easterly winds from Cape Jaoki (Arafura Sea) to Break Sea Spit. The rest of the voyage was remarkable for favourable weather. An idea of the speed of the Archer may be formed from the fact that she averaged 10¼ knots per hour during the entire voyage, on a consumption of 10 tons of fuel.
